i bought this when it was on sale (like 30 USD)

works pretty well, the 5 ghz network is a little wonky. ap is downstairs, computer is upstairs
i get ~65mbps speeds on the wifi

imo dont spend more than 60-80 dollars on one unless youre setting up some media server or something

More than likely it is placement. 5GHz offers more throughput but has more a significant dropoff rate than 2.4 bands, especially when going through walls and plenum. However, most new routers offer beamforming, which focuses the AP signal on your device by manipulating individual antenna gain.

I bought a Linksys EA6900 AC1900 router a couple of months back. It's on clearance price at Newegg for $99 (but I got it at Walmart for $45. Suck it). 300 Mbps on the 2.4 and 866 Mbps on the 5GHz (My adapters are only AC1200 rated).

Hm that is a nice one. Price is definitely a bonus. Any ideas for a modem that would work well also? I thought I had decided but now that I have learned more I want to recheck.

Unless you plan to do anything fancy it may not be necessary to buy your own internet gateway, not to mention the fact that your ISP may go ahead and decide to charge you for equipment rental (read as arbitrary charge) whether you use their provided gateway or not. Also some Internet Service Providers only have certain gateways and manufacturers they will officially support and will often blame your provided equipment for any issues whether it is on your end or not.

Best bet is to make sure that you have the latest, most up-to-date gateway they provide and just tie the new WiFi router in through the router's yellow port.

Just get this, it's $35 USD w/ shipping and has AC Wireless. It's all you need.

I know the feeling. That's why my gateway is strictly DSL modem. Nothing else.
