Friend already has an ssd, and im still not sure whether i want the 390 or 970

I'd think about a different brand of HDD, and what drive for your OS are you using?

That's enough to throw in an SSD if you want. You can get a 500GB for sub $200. If you want to try a high-speed NVMe for your biggest games, a 256GB Samsung 950 is around $180 and will work nicely on that board.
 
1.0-1.1 is budget, and the ssd is already taken care of, but I'm not sure if he'll want to buy another or replace his one he has.
 
Is he going to be overclocking at all? If not, a regular 6600 will more than do.
