Cheering yourselves up?

Over the past couple of months, I have been a terribly sad person. Usually I would just try to hide it in front of my friends and look happy so I don't end up acting rude or making them feel worried. I usually end up acting stupid when I do that, so I just recently stopped masking it and told them openly. Now, as I expected, they're worried about me, which could end up a good thing or not.

So, besides counseling and contemplating taking antidepressants, I was wondering what you guys do to cheer yourselves up. Maybe some of those suggestions would help.

If you think it's a real problem you should talk to a professional.

Go out and do stuff. Try activities you would normally enjoy. If you think you may be depressed, you should consider seeking help though. Depression is difficult to overcome and it's okay to get help if you need it.

All depends on how serious it is really I go through my slumps which im sure everyone has at some point in their life and more than once im sure if its coming to the point where suicidal thoughts have come in go get some help but as far as cheering yourself up just do things that you enjoy and ride this rollercoaster of feelings out, I cant tell you things I like to do ( they may not be the same things you're interested in ) but in simple words do what you like to do it'll only last for so long and if it doesn't look into seeking help.

Try to work out, it relieves a lot of stress and released endorphins in your brain. Not only do you feel better mentally you will start to feel better physically.
Also if hanging out with your friends doesn't help then try doing activities by yourself. ( aka working out :) )

I am really not the kind of guy that gets active. I'm a lazy person I admit :/

But I will try and work out and see how that goes.

Find a hobby and take time to do it when you feel like it. I play bass when I'm depressed (well, I play bass basically whenever I'm idle, including when I'm depressed; it does help). Like the other people said, we don't really know what you like to do - but there's probably something in particular that might be able to take your mind off things.

Also, like Ghost said, working out is quite nice - even if you're doing something that's not TOO strenuous, you'll be doing something productive, you'll feel better afterwards and you'll be able to sort out your thoughts while doing it.

what works for me are: i go to the swimming pool, empty my head and swim 1.5 miles. after that i go to sleep and when i wake up i can start a new day without feeling down.

a good gaming session with my friends helps too. doing stuff with my friends in general helps me

If you don't mind my asking, exactly how depressed are you?

By that I mean, are you contemplating suicide, having spells of crying and hopelessness, or just generally feeling down?

And as Krazy said, don't be afraid or ashamed or anything like that to seek help. I believe that depression is no less physical a problem than a broken bone or an open wound and sometimes it just needs time and other times it needs medical attention and medication to fix it, but don't get into the habit of thinking that you should just 'snap out of it' or anything like that if there truly is an issue that needs to be addressed.

If it's just a funk you're in, you may not need to sink money into therapy or medication, but keep an eye on it and pay close attention to your moods and steer clear of things that seem to effect it negatively.

It's really just something I can't really put in words. Perhaps I can describe it as frozen solid, stoic. I have no reaction to anything funny or sad, I don't talk much anymore, I don't like moving or walking, but if someone pisses me off I would go insane, and usually I'm a person that can keep my cool. All I do is just Lay down at my dorm after classes and do homework and play games. My good friend and roommate is worried about me, too. To me, it honestly feels like a bit more than a funk. It feels terrible. I also feel like I wasted most of my life and time ( ain't that the truth).

I decided to take anti depressants out for a spin. I also tried to begin working out thanks to ghost. As for professional help, I should probably just face the fact I really need help as you and Krazy mentioned. Although sometimes I can make a day a bit more happy and act like a "normal" person I want that to be constant.

Sometimes, someone else's method of stress relief can really help me if I never thought of it. It doesn't matter to a great or small effect, as long as it helps. Thus the reason I made this thread.
