When updating my zune (yes, I still have one. Though I imagine the same is possible in itunes) if a band has shitty album art I don't like, or I'm just in the mood.. I tend to make my own album art*. Feel free to post your own.
I tend to try and make mine fit with the music (I'd say that's fairly obvious, but some bands' album art really doesn't fit their music..) so I'm including samples with mine. I'd encourage anyone who contributes to do the same.
(this one I made specifically to mimic the art of their first album, which is the one in this video)

Spoiler:
I realize that "make my own" basically means "google an interesting image and add some text" but it's not always that simple. I take a long time to try and find a fitting image, and when I can't, I resort to using my drawings or photos. I'd do this more often accept I don't find my own photos and drawings to be very good, or I don't feel like setting aside several hours of drawing something (and that's provided it turns out acceptably on the first attempt) or taking my camera out and driving around town trying to find an appropriate subject for a simple only-I'll-ever-see-it image.
Never heard of anyone making their own album art in the way you do. I strongly agree to with you that album art plays a role in the way I perceive, or appreciate that album. I think that the album art represents that artist and the way which they wanted you to perceive the album by, and to change it would be an insult.
I've made art for a couple albums, but I can't remember any off the top of my head. I do occasionally make album artwork for an imaginary band that I created, but I'd rather not show anyone.
Needed some album art for Zunzagi's album Delayed Emotions since the zune software didn't recognize it. I didn't bother to look up the actual album art since I enjoy making my own, however, this is a case where the original album artwork would've been fine, cause this is pretty nice looking (despite the usually-looks-nice-but-is-so-overused-it's-annoying trend of the circle in the dead center of the artwork.):
also, this album is free, so check it: http://zunzagi.bandcamp.com/album/delayed-emotions
Some of my Russian pals (HRG included) on facebook corrected my incorrect Russian. Which, on this, is still incorrect, but that's mostly because the straight translation of Zunzagi into Cyrillic doesn't look that great. I wanted different/cooler colors and the background a bit more muted and the text less blatant. So.. yar she blows.
I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to these things. Even if the album art is awful, I'd still rather have the original artwork for an album. The closest I've come to making something like my own artwork is cropping a scan of a magazine for the insert that came with it.
Not to be every other reply in my own thread.. but.. in the GFX section.. I think that shouldn't be tremendously unexpected.
Anyway.. usually, I'd agree.. but in certain cases, the album art is just so abysmally boring or terrible that I don't want to see it. And in cases where album art just doesn't exist (such as when I record things as-u-hear off soundcloud or where it's some rare band or obscure EP or something) then I make my own. Not to mention, the design nerd in me thinks it's fun and (even if only to myself) interesting and self-gratifying. But I'd still like to see other people's contributions. (Although, apparently, me and valk are the only ones who do this...)
